Wielding the pen to bring peace to the world, with a blend of boldness and sorrow
Xin Qiji's poetic style is characterized by its passionate and bold vigor, representing the pinnacle of the bold and unconstrained school of Southern Song Dynasty ci poetry. He has left behind collections such as “Jia Xuan Long and Short Sentences“, and is the most prolific ci poet of the Song Dynasty, with over six hundred of his works still in existence today. Many of these poems focus on the pressing issues of the nation and ethnicity, expressing his deep love for his country. Works like “Man Jiang Hong“ demonstrate his steadfast belief in the recovery of the Central Plains, while pieces such as “Po Zhen Zi“ reflect his nostalgia for the northern regions and his praise for the struggle against Jurchen Jin Dynasty. These works are predominantly uplifting in tone and fervent in spirit. Xin Qiji took the fate of his country and ethnicity as his own responsibility and expressed through his poetry a strong desire for national unification.
Able to mount a horse and settle the realm, yet unfulfilled ambitions remain
Xin Qiji was born amidst the invasion of the Jurchen Jin Dynasty, and from a young age, he was determined to restore the Central Plains and serve his country. His ambitions were lofty, yet his life was fraught with misfortune. In his youth, he joined the anti-Jurchen Jin Dynasty resistance forces, demonstrating exceptional military talent and becoming a valued asset to the Southern Song court. However, due to the internal party struggles within the Southern Song, the powerful forces advocating for peace, and his own unyielding and upright character, his ideals were repeatedly thwarted. Especially after he proposed a plan to reclaim the north, not only was it not realized, but he was also marginalized and eventually exiled to a place far from the center of power. This left him with a lifelong regret of unfulfilled ambitions.
Earnestly inquiring about homeland, with a sense of pride and longing intertwined
With the passage of time, Xin Qiji's state of mind gradually shifted from fervor to melancholy. His long experience of wandering outside intensified his longing for his hometown, which was intertwined with his deep concern for the future of the nation. “Shui Diao Ge Tou · Gong Cai Ruo Shou“ is a piece Xin Qiji composed for his fellow townsman Gong Xiang's birthday, in which lines like “MountTai leans against the azure sky, and the Wen River rolls like cold clouds rushing“ evoke memories of his hometown and recall his youth when he joined the military with aspirations to serve his country. The phrase “Inquiring earnestly about hometown“ directly expresses his endless care and attachment to his distant home, intertwining his homesickness with the hope of reclaiming the lost lands of Shandong, where personal and national sentiments are merged.

Though he ultimately failed to fulfill his grand vision, the poetry he left behind stands as an immortal monument, engraving the passions of both the individual and the era.
